Two new books have come out from well-known improv names that are worth checking out.
Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out is written by Mick Napier, a Chicago-based director, actor and teacher who has been in the improv world for almost 25 years. He is the founder and artistic director of The Annoyance Theater, and has been a director at The Second City.
This is the second edition of his 2004 book, which many improvisers consider a natural second textbook after Truth in Comedy. Truth in Comedy sets the rules of improv; Improvise teachers performers how to break them. With a new introduction by Stephen Colbert, it's an excellent book for improvisers who want to add additional tools to their repertoire. |

Improvisation at the Speed of Life: The TJ and Dave Book is a chance to learn from two of the masters of improv. If you're not familiar with TJ and Dave, they have an immensely respected weekly two-man long-form show; the documentary Trust Us, This Is All Made Up. TJ Jagodowski and Dave Pasquesi are a phenomenal long-form team, with great teamwork and unspoken communication. This book is their attempt to share some of their successful techniques with other improvisers. Those people looking to foray into long-form should give it a read.
